Appendix A

The Downloads

On this page, you can download all of the tutorial files in one compressed archive, so that you can install and run the tutorial offline and save connect charges. Also, you can get your hands on two free fonts, so that you can see this tutorial as I intended it to be seen.

Need a new browser? You'll find some links to suitable candidates below.

Downloading the tutorial

All you need to do is select the appropriate link below to download the compressed file containing all of the tutorial files. When you begin the download, you'll be presented with a dialog box asking you where you want to save the file. Choose any directory you like.

To decompress the Zip file, you will need a utility like WinZip or Aladdin Expander. If you don't have WinZip or a similar program, you can pick it up from many shareware sites like http://www.shareware.com or http://www.tucows.com. Aladdin Expander is available free from Aladdin Systems at http://www.aladdinsys.com/.

To decompress the StuffIt file, you will need a utility like Aladdin Expander, available from the address above. (Expander is useful because it handles both Zip and StuffIt archives, as well as other formats.)

Once you have decompressed the files to a directory of your choice, just load the file named "index.html" into your browser, and you're all set to go.

Download the Zip archive:  tutorial.zip (485K)

Download the StuffIt archive:  tutorial.sit (475K)

Downloading the fonts

I designed this tutorial to be seen with Microsoft's Georgia and Verdana and Monotype's Andale Mono typefaces. If your browser supports CSS, and you have these fonts installed on your computer, then the body text will be displayed in Georgia, the page headers and footers and table headings in Verdana, and the code samples in Andale Mono. If your browser doesn't support CSS, or you don't have these fonts installed on your computer, then your browser will use a substitute -- and that's perfectly OK. If you'd like to get the fonts, go to Microsoft's TrueType core fonts for the Web page, where you can get these and other good screen fonts for free, in both Windows and Macintosh versions. If you want to get a browser that supports CSS, then see below.

Downloading a browser

If your browser doesn't comply fully with HTML 4.0 or doesn't support frames or CSS, you can get the latest versions of Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer, or Opera using the links below. For those of you not familiar with it, Opera is an excellent browser that was built "from the ground up" with the intention of being very compact -- and it is. The download is only about 1.5Mbytes, a fraction of the other two, and so will take only a few minutes using a 28.8 modem.

Download Opera, Internet Explorer
or Netscape Navigator
Opera Internet Explorer for Windows
or Internet Explorer for Mac
Netscape Navigator

Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator are both completely free. Opera provides a free version, but the cost is supported by advertising that pops up in part of the Opera window. If you choose to register Opera (which is cheap -- at the time of writing, it is US $39), then these advertisements will be eliminated.
